Dr Poonam Malik BSc, MSc, MBA, PhD, FRSB: University MedTech, Biotech Consultant Advisor, Life Sciences & Health Sector Expertise, Mentor, Social Entrepreneur and Angel Investor.
Dr Poonam Malik is an academic entrepreneurial research management leader with extensive experience of working in innovation, enterprise, economic development and partnership within Life Sciences, Health and Technology in Academia, Industry & Business sectors globally. As Board Member of the Scottish Enterprise with responsibility for £340 million annual budget; Board Member of the Skills Development Scotland with responsibility for £220 million annual budget, Non-Executive Director (NED) for Firstport, Scotland’s National Start-up Social Enterprise Development Agency- engaging with over 1100 Start-ups, supported by Scottish Government; NED for FirstImpact, a B-Corp status company generating value and societal impact- Dr Malik is focussed on stimulating economic & inclusive growth with business- and universities- link ups. She is Governor/University Court member, for University of the Highlands & Islands (UHI), highest governing body responsible for a unique Partnership of 13 Academic Further & Higher Education Colleges.
Dr Malik is a Board Member Advisor for Wallet Services, an innovative Blockchain Technology Company harnessing the benefits of transformative Blockchain Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). Dr Malik also advises Scotland’s National Academy- Royal Society of Edinburgh’s ‘Economy & Enterprise Committee (EEC)’ as Member, on economy, academia- business innovation, commercialisation & entrepreneurship policies. She is Director of the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS), a Social Enterprise, supporting communities & health care organisations with United Nations for implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally. Dr Malik is an active Member of Investing Women Angels, Scotland’s only all-women Angel Investor Group, supporting female entrepreneurs and innovative Company Founders with investment, Mentoring, Advisory and training. An active Member of Changing the Chemistry (CtC), Dr Malik is a strong proponent of diversity and inclusion in Boardrooms Advisory and speaks regularly on public forums including for Equate Scotland & Scottish Government’s Public Appointments.
Recently, Dr Malik was chosen among the top #100Alumni from >17,000 Alumni in University of Edinburgh’s Business School’s 100-year operating history (1919-2019) for delivering impact globally. She has travelled, worked and spoken globally and recently managed governance, global partnerships and stakeholder engagement with over 12 International Organisations in multiple Asian Partner countries including India, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. A finalist in Scottish Women’s Awards 2019 for ‘Social Leader of the Year’ award and Scottish Women’s Awards 2018 finalist for ‘Services to Education Leadership’ award- Dr Malik has held positions in the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cumbria/Lancaster. Dr Malik was awarded the Title of Assoc. PROFESSOR of Biomedical Sciences in 2015 and a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology in 2017 thus is an elected FELLOW of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB). She has held personal Research FELLOWSHIP from the Royal Society UK, a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK.
Dr Malik holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Glasgow, UK; an MBA in Strategy and Leadership from the University of Edinburgh Business School, UK; an MSc in Biotechnology (Animal Sciences) from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, ICAR; and a BSc degree in Chemistry and Zoology from DayalBagh Educational Institute. Dr Malik is a Member of the Microbiology Society UK and Biochemical Society UK. Dr Malik has published widely in high-quality international research journals. With STEM background and nurturing innovation with data and technology- Dr Malik brings expertise and interest in the life sciences, infectious diseases, health, MedTech, BioTech and digital transformation growth and skills development across public, private and third sectors. Her interests are Strategy, Leadership, Technology, Data-driven innovation, Stakeholder Engagement, Higher Education Research & Innovation, Commercialisation of knowledge, Entrepreneurship, Start-ups growth, Gender Diversity and inclusion.
